National Age Without Apology Month 2024 https://www.awarenessdays.com/awareness-days-calendar/national-age-without-apology-month-2024/ Fri, 31 May 2024 23:00:00 +0000 https://www.awarenessdays.com/awareness-days-calendar/national-age-without-apology-month-2024/

What is National Age Without Apology Month?

Working towards a more positive narrative around age, skincare brand Willowberry champions Age Without Apology.

The current age narrative in beauty can inadvertently make women feel bad about their age, due to age-resistant wording such as ‘anti-ageing’ combined with a need for more older women to be represented in beauty imagery.

In 2021, Willowberry surveyed 1,000 women aged 30-80, to discover their feelings on age in beauty: A huge 97% of women surveyed feel it important to see better representation of older women used by beauty brands and the media; 85% want to see more positive and realistic wording on age in beauty; 72% either don’t like the term ‘anti-ageing’ or don’t believe the anti-ageing claim; 50% even said that anti-ageing messaging makes them not look forward to getting older, demonstrating the wider impact that beauty messaging can have on our lives.

As an industry, we have a responsibility to make age visible and normal.

On 16th June 2021 Willowberry launched its Age Without Apology Pledge, inviting the beauty industry to join forces to make real change, by using better language around age and showing older ages within beauty imagery. A Founder Member Collective of industry peers support the pledge, including Millie Kendall, MBE, British Beauty Council; Jane Cunningham, British Beauty Blogger; and more.

To mark the anniversary of the Age Without Apology Pledge launch and to drive change to the age narrative in beauty, Willowberry is creating a National Age Without Apology Month, held annually in June to actively encourage people to celebrate age and ageing.

When is National Age Without Apology Month?

National Age Without Apology Month will begin on the 1st June 2024 and run for the entire month. This will become an annual event from 2024 onwards.

How to get involved in National Age Without Apology Month

Founded by Willowberry, National Age Without Apology Month provides an alternative to the current age message, to change the perception of age by celebrating age and the ageing process.

Willowberry invites you to take part in this age celebration on Instagram, by sharing who inspires you to Age Without Apology and why – whether it’s a relation, friend, colleague, celebrity, influencer, etc – simply upload a picture of the person onto your Instagram page, explaining why they inspire you within the caption, using the hashtag #AgeWithoutApologyMonth and tagging in @willowberryskin

Willowberry wants to fill social media with positive examples of age and inspire people on how to see age and the ageing process in a different light. After all, ageing is an honour and should be revered, not feared.

World Female Ranger Week 2024 https://www.awarenessdays.com/awareness-days-calendar/world-female-ranger-week-2024/ Sun, 23 Jun 2024 23:00:00 +0000 https://www.awarenessdays.com/awareness-days-calendar/world-female-ranger-week-2024/

What is World Female Ranger Week?

Adventurer Holly Budge launches World Female Ranger Week (June 23-30th, 2024) to amplify the impact of female wildlife rangers on a global stage. This ground-breaking global awareness week, spearheaded by international NGO, How Many Elephants (HME) celebrates and supports female wildlife rangers – They’re bold, changing the game and paving the way for women to stand alongside men at the forefront of conservation, but they need allies.

The pioneering World Female Ranger Week (WFRW) includes online and live events, plus a fundraising platform – http://www.worldfemalerangerweek.org – to raise vital funds for the ranger teams and share their stories.

The founder of How Many Elephants and World Female Ranger Week, Holly Budge says, “having patrolled with multiple ranger teams in Africa, I’ve seen first-hand how these bold women are impacting lives; Protecting wildlife, uplifting communities and empowering other women. WFRW highlights the significant gender imbalance in environmental conservation. My team and I will continue collating gender-specific data about female rangers globally, enabling us to identify their needs, find tangible solutions and help build effective policies to contribute towards positive outcomes; for female rangers and conservation as a whole.”

As champions of wildlife conservation, as role models, as educators and as beacons of hope, female rangers are not only transforming attitudes towards the role of women around the world; they are showing the capabilities and success of females in traditionally male roles. However, less than 11% of the global wildlife ranger workforce is female. With women being natural communicators, protectors and investing their earned income in their families, bringing gender equality into the workforce enhances community conservation efforts and relationships. Over the last two years, the pandemic has crippled tourism and funding for conservation projects globally. The lack of tourists visiting National Parks has led to many rangers losing their jobs or having significant salary cuts. The knock-on effect of this is huge. For example, one ranger in Africa may support up to 16 family members. Additionally, reduced vigilance in tourist hotspots has left wildlife even more vulnerable to poaching.

So, the often-challenging work of rangers is paramount right now. Day and night, female rangers patrol wilderness areas, monitoring wildlife, seizing snares, working with communities and in some cases, arresting poachers, all to save iconic species from extinction. They are away from their families for long periods, sometimes facing workplace security issues and battling social stigma. Many of these inspirational women have overcome adversity, poverty and marginalisation. Becoming a ranger has empowered them, turned them into breadwinners and property owners, and has allowed them access to higher education and much-needed healthcare. They need our support to continue their vital work.

When is World Female Ranger Week?

June 23rd-30th 2024 (and annually)

How to get involved in World Female Ranger Week?

World Female Ranger Week is seeking long-term strategic partnerships with companies, associations, and global citizens to expand the campaign’s reach to strengthen the support of female rangers. Businesses and individuals can set up fundraising pages via worldfemalerangerweek.org.

For updates, follow @worldfemalerangerweek on Instagram and Facebook, @femalerangerwk on Twitter, or use hashtag, #worldfemalerangerweek.

Rabbit Awareness Week 2024 https://www.awarenessdays.com/awareness-days-calendar/rabbit-awareness-week-2024/ Sun, 23 Jun 2024 23:00:00 +0000 https://www.awarenessdays.com/awareness-days-calendar/rabbit-awareness-week-2024/

Head to the Rabbit Awareness Week website to find out how you can get involved in Rabbit Awareness Week 2024.

RAAG brings together the expertise of the RAW partners who have successfully campaigned to improve the welfare of pet rabbits for the past 17 years.

Led by Burgess Pet Care, the RAAG comprises the RSPCA, Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund (RWAF), Wood Green The Animals Charity, PDSA and Blue Cross.

The Rabbit Awareness Action Group (RAAG) is the trusted voice for rabbit welfare, which draws on the combined knowledge of a coalition of experts who have, for the past 17 years, campaigned effectively through Rabbit Awareness Week (RAW) to improve the lives of pet rabbits.

The formation of the RAAG reflects the need to establish an on-going dialogue that ensures rabbit welfare remains high on the agenda year-round. Members of the RAAG are committed to raising awareness of the five key welfare needs of pet rabbits among owners, particularly in light of the recent launch of the first Good Practice Code for Rabbit Welfare.

Recognising that rabbits are one of the UK’s most owned, but least understood, animals, the RAAG is determined to build on the profound and positive campaigning, which 15 years of RAW has already achieved. Recent RAW campaigns include ‘Move Away from Muesli’, to highlight the health risks associated with muesli-style diets, which has resulted in fewer rabbits being fed muesli as one of their main food types – down from 49% in 2011 to 18% in 2020. This, along with other key campaigns, will be a key focus for the RAAG over the coming years, helping to ensure that the UK’s pet rabbits are able to lead happy and healthy lives.

Deafblind Awareness Week

26 June – 2 July 2024

Deafblindness is far more common than many people realise… around 400,000 people are affected by sight and hearing loss in the UK. That’s enough to fill Wembley Stadium nearly five times!

It affects everyone differently, some might need to adjust the settings on their TV or turn up the volume on the phone, and others might need assistance dogs, canes and more formal care.

But for anyone affected, everyday activities can be difficult and time consuming. Imagine trying to book a doctor’s appointment, meet a friend for coffee, or even make dinner if you can’t see or hear very well.

My deafblindness

During Deafblind Awareness Week we’re showing that everyone experiences deafblindness in different ways. Watch these videos below to find out how Molly, John and Jack are affected.

Share the story

This year, we are asking everyone to share the story of deafblindness. So, be aware of deafblindness, understand how to help someone who has it and to tell someone else about it, to help spread the word. The more people who understand the condition, the more we can make life a little easier for people who are affected by it. By working together, we can make a huge difference!

Visit https://deafblind.org.uk/deafblind-awareness-week for downloadable content to help you pass on the message and spread the word!

Get social

To help spread the word this Deafblind Awareness Week, please share our videos on social media or tell a friend about Molly, Jack and John’s stories! You can download the Deafblind Awareness Week logo, social media graphics and email signature below.
