Our message is simple: everyone has a story to tell and sharing it can be a source of pleasure and power.\nOn Wednesday the 21st of June we aim to inspire creative writing on a grand scale‚ young people are more inclined to write creatively if they see adults around them doing so and writing can benefit people of all ages. We welcome participation from any individual or group\, regardless of age\, gender\, and cultural or economic backgrounds. Our aim is to promote all forms of writing and encourage communities to join in via a programme of public\, educational and online activities. \nNational Writing Day is led by First Story\, a national literacy charity dedicated to changing lives through writing\, and supported by fifty-five Official Partners and numerous other associate organisations. It is made possible with support from Arts Council England and Old Possums Practical Trust. \nJoin in by writing your own original piece on the day using some of our creative resources\, attending an event hosted by one of our partners or sharing your own work on social media using #nationalwritingday. \nI’m an educator\, how can I involve my school? \nThere are a variety of ways you can involve your school in National Writing Day. You could: \ndeliver a dedicated creative writing lesson using free teaching resources on our site; \nhost a local writer for a reading or workshop; \ntakeover the school assembly giving young writers a platform to share their work; or \nfacilitate a lunch-time writing workshop. \nYou can download teaching resources for Early Years to Key Stage 5 as well as our Write Away! activity. \nCan anyone put on an event? \nYes! \nWe are encouraging anyone across the UK to get creative and host a writing event in their community. You could put on a mass writing activity in the town square\, a poetry slam\, a free writing workshop\, a pop-up poetry stall; whatever your idea we’d love to hear about it. \nHow do I list my event? \nYou can register your event on the National Writing Day website. Take a look at other events already listed to see what else is happening across the UK. \nIs there a fee for being involved? \nWe don’t charge anything for hosting an event and anyone can organise a National Writing Day event. The event takes place on June 27th and a number of events are organised by the Vision council to help promote the importance of wearing sunglasses. \nResearch has shown that people who do not wear sunglasses risk doing substantial damage to their eyes due to the harmful effects of the sun’s rays. Even on cloudy days\, sunlight can still be strong enough to cause lasting damage to the eyes\, which means that it is important to wear sunglasses or another form of UV eye protection at all times. \nTo help celebrate and promote International Sunglasses Day\, the Vision Council is encouraging both groups and individuals to get involved by taking photographs of themselves wearing sunglasses. These photos can be shared on various social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook with the hashtags #SunglassSelfie and #NationalSunglassesDay. \nThese days sunglasses come in just about every style imaginable as well as a broad spectrum of prices\, which means that there is sure to be the perfect pair to suit anyone. Each week focussed on a special theme. \nPrevious themes were… \nWeek 1 (from 29 June): The Natural World \nWeek 2 (from 6 July): Connecting across generations \nWeek 3 (from 13 July): Literacy and creative writing \nSchools\, galleries\, museums and community groups were invited to plan and register visual arts activities for children and families. These activities gave children and young people\, together with their teachers\, parents and carers\, the opportunity to take part in practical art activities with artists\, makers and educators. \nThe COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted how essential creativity and the visual arts are for learning\, connecting and wellbeing. While venues\, cultural organisations and school buildings were closed\, engaging in the visual arts became more important than ever. \nIn 2024\, to support the advocacy work of the visual arts engagement and participation sector\, Engage will celebrate the amazing health and wellbeing work delivered through the sector. Check Engage’s website\, E-bulletin and social media for details. \nEngage is delighted that Children’s Art Week has been adopted by many organisations and individuals. We would therefore encourage you to make your own plans for CAW in 2024! We have a selection of templates to inspire your activity. Individual artists and makers also took part. \nActivities ranged from a live-streamed session with an artist or special activity packs\, to digital challenges engaging with online collections\, physical resources distributed by post or activity delivered over the phone — think outside the box! Events and activities were filtered by age and location\, so think about whether you would like to connect to a specific history or person from your local area and what age groups you would like to engage with. \nOrganisers are welcome to revisit existing resources and activities to programme for Children’s Art Week 2021. If you have activities\, a campaign or programme already in action\, think about how you can respond to this year’s themes and join in! \nAll registered events or activities\, excluding private events registered by schools or organisations\, must be free or low cost to participate\, and must be able to be accessed or distributed remotely. Organisers will receive support from Engage to plan\, run and publicise their events or activities. \nRegistration will open at the end of May. \nBringing Children and Art Together Children’s Art Week \nChildren’s Art Week takes place in the UK and is organised by Engage. And what a celebration this should be! The holiday was established in 1994 by President Bill Clinton as the day that recognizes\, uplifts and supports the role of parents in the rearing of children. ay. \nThis observance is more consistent\, because it minimizes traditional sex-based differences in parental roles. But as far as Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are very popular in the USA\, its unlikely Parents’ Day will replace them any time soon. \nSo if you are parents then give yourself a break today and treat yourself. Do they just dig or are there other aspects to their work? A Day in Archaeology showcases “a day in the life” of archaeologists from all over the UK and this year’s event will be taking place on the 29th of July. \nIn this section you will find a wealth of blogs from archaeologists\, heritage professionals\, students and volunteers talking about a day in their life. You might be surprised to see just how many opportunities there are to get involved in archaeology from fieldwork to the science lab\, museums to building sites\, the possibilities are endless. Our contributors will also share the paths they took to get to where they are now. Find out how their careers developed\, why they chose to study archaeology or how they got involved in volunteering. \nBlog posts are uploaded throughout A Day In Archaeology and stay on the Festival website site all year round to form a developing resource for anyone interested in a career in archaeology or wanting to find out more about the range of opportunities to participate. \nWe invite professional and volunteer archaeologists and students to submit blogs as part of A Day in Archaeology\, it’s easy to register and take part and we want to bring together as many stories and experiences from across the archaeology and heritage sector as possible to highlight just how diverse and interesting archaeology is. As an area on the up and up\, it’s becoming one of the most important places in the UK\, as the likes of Leeds\, Hull\, Bradford have become prominent as centres of finance\, culture and much more. \nSo\, whether you’re from Yorkshire or not\, celebrate like one of the locals on August 1st by donning your flat cap\, walking the damp countryside with your whippet\, eating a Yorkshire pudding with gravy\, then settling down to complain about the rising price of a pint of best bitter\, ending the night on a cheerier note by remembering the good old days. Allotments have many benefits. They bring people together and unite them through their shared love of low-cost\, healthy fresh fruit and vegetables\, physical exercise and social interaction. \nAllotments are a valuable resource and both you as individuals and as community groups take immense pride in their up keep and produce. As allotment holders you are already active in your local community. However did you know that there are powers available that can help you and others in your local community shape and improve the neighbourhood in which you live? These powers\, known as Community Rights\, give recognition to valuable community assets such as allotments\, pubs\, local shops and community centres and can help ensure that these assets continue to be of benefit to local people. \nYou are able to list your allotment as an Asset of Community Value and this is where the Community Right to Bid comes in. It can help to protect vital community assets such as allotments in your neighbourhood. Allotments add to the wellbeing of local communities and you and your neighbours can therefore nominate your allotment to be put on a list of Assets of Community Value by your Local Authority. If an Asset of Community Value is then put up for sale\, local community groups can pause‚the sale for six months while they raise the funds to bid to buy it. \nNearly 100 allotments have been listed by local community groups across the country. Are you one of them? If so you can now apply for an ACV Certificate to celebrate your allotment. \nEmail community.assets@communities.gsi.gov.uk for more details about getting a personalised certificate for you to print out and display to let everyone know how much your allotment is valued by your local community. For more information about assets of community value and how to protect them please visithttp://mycommunity.org.uk/programme/community-asset-ownership/ \nThe Department for Communities and Local Government has also produced a simple guide to community rights called You’ve got the power?’ \nYou can also have your say in the way your neighbourhood develops in the future. Neighbourhood planning enables local communities to shape the places where you live and work. Over 1400 communities have started neighbourhood planning in their area and around a third of the neighbourhood plans which are now in force include policies on allotments. If you’re interested to find out how you can get started\, there’s lots of information here: http://mycommunity.org.uk/programme/neighbourhood-planning/ \nIf you’re involved in your local area\, you can also join the My Community Network to chat to experts and connect with others who are also passionate about their community. This is an annual international awareness month to raise support\, funding and awareness of childhood cancers and the impact for sufferers and families of sufferers of childhood cancer. It was founded in 2010 by former US President Barack Obama and is mainly run in the form of awareness events by cancer charities. \nA Month of Movement is a September initiative that aims to encourage you to move more for the month of September and raise vital funds for research into children’s cancers as you go. \nChildhood cancer is devastating to growth and development in children\, and devastating to their families and friends. At a time when young people should be focusing on school\, play and socialising\, if they have cancer\, their focus can be on medication\, operations\, and what life they have left. \nParents of childhood cancer sufferers have the anguish of watching their children suffer\, and the stress of decisions on medications and treatments as well as decisions on time of work for themselves and time off school for the child\, and worst\, trying to explain to a child what is happening to them and answering the resulting questions on life and faith\, and worst of all is the loss of a child to cancer\, a devastation that can never be put right. \nSome forms of cancer are mainly or exclusively only seen in children\, and that is something highlighted by the awareness month. Children can be more resilient to cancer and cancer treatments than adults\, and there are many cases of triumph and complete recovery\, where children make a complete recovery and grow up to normal life. But awareness\, education and support are vital\, which is why Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is also vital. \nWhen is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month / A Month of Movement 2024?\nA Month of Movement takes place each September from the 1st until the 30th. \nHow to get involved in A Month of Movement.\nYoung Lives Vs Cancer are one of the charities asking you to move an extra 30 minutes each day for 30 days in the hope of raising awareness and funds and encouraging healthy habits as an added bonus. Like other awareness campaigns\, this campaign aims to inspire and educate people on the importance of eye health and why they should go for regular sight tests. \nMany people often fear losing vision; yet take minimal steps in caring for their eyes. This is what the National Eye Health Week aims to change. Having said that\, here are some of the interesting facts about eye health you may not know. \nAbout 2 million persons are living with severe sight loss in UK\, that can significantly impact their daily activities. Half of this population’s sight loss is avoidable. \nA sight test easily detects the early signs of eye conditions such as glaucoma\, which can be treated soon. During any sight test\, other health conditions including diabetes and high blood pressure can be detected. \nTo maintain healthy eyes\, you should eat well\, avoid smoking and wear eye protection during bright sunlight. \nThe importance of eye sight towards the overall wellbeing\, independence and quality of life of an individual is too important to be ignored. This is why eye care charities\, health professionals and organisations across the UK are encouraged to join together during this week to promote the importance of eye health and need for regular tests.
