This ground-breaking global awareness week\, spearheaded by international NGO\, How Many Elephants (HME) celebrates and supports female wildlife rangers – They’re bold\, changing the game and paving the way for women to stand alongside men at the forefront of conservation\, but they need allies.\n\nThe pioneering World Female Ranger Week (WFRW) includes online and live events\, plus a fundraising platform – http://www.worldfemalerangerweek.org – to raise vital funds for the ranger teams and share their stories. \nThe founder of How Many Elephants and World Female Ranger Week\, Holly Budge says\, “having patrolled with multiple ranger teams in Africa\, I’ve seen first-hand how these bold women are impacting lives; Protecting wildlife\, uplifting communities and empowering other women. WFRW highlights the significant gender imbalance in environmental conservation. My team and I will continue collating gender-specific data about female rangers globally\, enabling us to identify their needs\, find tangible solutions and help build effective policies to contribute towards positive outcomes; for female rangers and conservation as a whole.” \nAs champions of wildlife conservation\, as role models\, as educators and as beacons of hope\, female rangers are not only transforming attitudes towards the role of women around the world; they are showing the capabilities and success of females in traditionally male roles. However\, less than 11% of the global wildlife ranger workforce is female. With women being natural communicators\, protectors and investing their earned income in their families\, bringing gender equality into the workforce enhances community conservation efforts and relationships. Over the last two years\, the pandemic has crippled tourism and funding for conservation projects globally. The lack of tourists visiting National Parks has led to many rangers losing their jobs or having significant salary cuts. The knock-on effect of this is huge. For example\, one ranger in Africa may support up to 16 family members. Additionally\, reduced vigilance in tourist hotspots has left wildlife even more vulnerable to poaching. \nSo\, the often-challenging work of rangers is paramount right now. Day and night\, female rangers patrol wilderness areas\, monitoring wildlife\, seizing snares\, working with communities and in some cases\, arresting poachers\, all to save iconic species from extinction. They are away from their families for long periods\, sometimes facing workplace security issues and battling social stigma. Many of these inspirational women have overcome adversity\, poverty and marginalisation. Becoming a ranger has empowered them\, turned them into breadwinners and property owners\, and has allowed them access to higher education and much-needed healthcare. SUMMARY:World Sand Dune Day 2024
DESCRIPTION:A World Sand Dune Day is being setup to highlight the importance of sand dunes.\nHealthy dunes provide habitats for a wealth of rare and specialised wildlife. These include a range of wildflowers\, bryophytes\, invertebrates and insects who require bare sand habitat to survive.Coastal sand dunes are also beautiful and important landscapes for communities\, both as recreational spaces allowing personal connection with nature\, and as places filled with cultural heritage and celebrated sites of historic renown. \nOver the last 80 years\, open sand has largely disappeared from UK sand dunes\, being replaced by dense grass and scrub. This change has been caused by factors such as the introduction of non-native plants\, lower levels of grazing\, climate change and air pollution. As the dunes have become more stable and overgrown\, rare wildlife has declined. \nThe day is being set up by the Twyni Byw-Sands of LIFE and Dynamic Dunescapes projects. These are two projects working to protect sand dunes and the wildlife that depends upon them. Events are still currently at planning stage\, but you can keep in touch by visiting their twitter accounts: @TwyniByw and @DynamicDunes. The hashtag for the day will be #WorldSandDuneDay. \nSands of LIFE (LIFE17 NAT/UK/000023) is a major conservation project to revitalise sand dunes across Wales. It will recreate natural movement in the dunes and rejuvenate habitats which are home to some of our rarest wildlife. The £4 million project\, led by Natural Resources Wales (NRW)\, will restore over 2400 hectares of sand dunes\, across four Special Areas of Conservation\, on 10 separate Welsh sites. The project has received 75% funding from the LIFE Programme of the European Union\, with the Welsh Government providing 25% match funding. \nDynamic Dunescapes (HG-16-08643; LIFE17 NAT/UK/000570-DuneLIFE) is a partnership project rejuvenating sand dunes in England and Wales. Project partners are Natural England\, Plantlife\, Natural Resources Wales\, National Trust and The Wildlife Trusts. DESCRIPTION:June 25 is the Day of the Seafarer\, an annual and international event day coordinated by the International Maritime Organisation.\nLast year’s Day of the Seafarer celebrated seafarers and let the world know how and why seafarers are indispensable to everyone. This year the Day will recognise the unique contribution made by seafarers from all over the world to international seaborne trade\, the world economy and civil society as a whole\, with the theme Seafarers Matter’. \nThe day recognises the unique and vital role of seafarers in the global community\, and the United Nations recognise the Day of the Seafarer as an observance day. \nThe Day of the Seafarer was established in 2010 by by a resolution adopted at a diplomatic conference in Manila. The revised International Convention on Standards of Training\, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW)\, the original STCW was to ensure an international standard of competency and welfare for seafarers\, for their safety\, and the revision was to ensure the upholding of the Day of the Seafarer as part of this. The convention’s aim was to recognise the contribution by seafarers to society and economy globally. \nThe resolution encourages governments\, shipping firms\, companies associated with sea trade and others\, to promote and uphold sea trade and seafarers through the Day of the Seafarer. \nThe day encourages international public and official conversation about seafarers and seafaring\, and the well-being of those involved in it\, and interactive media relating to the Day of the Seafarer has proved extremely popular around the world\, for example quizzes and interactive maps\, videos and photo galleries\, and social media hashtags and discussions. The day aims to see events run in ports and seafarer centres as well as online. \nLeading up to the 25 June\, seafarers are being invited to answer questions on what a fair future for seafarers looks like. The answers will be shared afterwards and will provide a soundboard to help guide our actions moving forward. Polls are available on all IMO social media platforms.

DESCRIPTION:No\, this has absolutely nothing to do with MTV\, the internet or dating. This unsurprisingly has everything to do with catfish! Perhaps one of the lesser known days of recognition and celebration\, National Catfish Day has assisted the continued growth of this specific type of aqua farming across the USA.\nJune 25 is National Catfish Day in the USA. The holiday was designated by President Ronald Reagan on June 25 in 1987. National Catfish Day celebrates the value of farm-raised fish. \nOriginally the commemorative bill was proposed by Congressmen Mike Epsy\, who having recognised the industry as growing in his home state\, endeavoured to encourage the growth of the industry further afield. Catfish were not a popular choice of delicacy at the time. Although initially the bill was unsuccessful\, Mr Epsy garnered support from fellow congressmen and was also able\, by providing the best catfish luncheons to military leaders\, to ensure catfish was added to the military commissary menu. As a result his popularity at election time grew in his home state\, thanks to the increase in demand for catfish\, as did support for the bill. The text of the Proclamation by President Ronald Reagan\, illustrates the boom in the industry\, the increase in sales and the innovative methods developed to ensure the highest standards were met. \nSo why not look up some Catfish recipes and find out just why they make one of the USA’s most popular fish to eat? \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:An initiative established by The Clean Beaches Coalition\, Clean Beaches week is celebrated annually from July 1st – July 7th. With so much media attention focussing on the effects of our waste on marine life\, the oceans and our coastal landscape this is an excellent opportunity to be proactive and attempt to address a small part of the overall problem while raising awareness of a much larger global challenge. \nIn 2007 the United States Senate and House of Representatives passed the National Clean Beaches Week Resolution by unanimous consent. \nKnown as the Earth Day for beaches\, hundreds of events are organized locally on beaches around the USA and include beach clean ups\, art fairs\, seafood festivals and other educational events aiming to raise awareness about respecting the beach and surrounding environment. \nThe coalition has set 7 simple reminders for those using the beach which they hope will assist the preservation of the beaches as well as protect people from the natural hazards that can occur at the shore. \n1. Leave no trace (what you carry in\, carry out) \n2. Move your body (walk\, run or swim) \n3. Don’t tread the dunes (use a walkover or walk-thru) \n4. Know your limits (swim\, surf and boat safely) \n5. You are what you eat (eat healthy seafood) \n6. Feed your mind. (read a book) \n7. Respect the Ocean (riptides\, storms\, natural resources) \nThe Clean Beaches Coalition also certifies beaches across the USA\, some of which are included in the annual USA Today Listing of the 10Best Beaches. A panel of beach experts along with 10Best contributors picked the shortlist with the top 10 winners chosen by popular vote. \nThe 4th of July is the biggest day for beach visits in the USA\, so why not go along and offer a helping hand and don’t forget the 7 Principles!

DESCRIPTION:A Special Day to Raise Awareness of Population Issues\nJuly 11th every year is World Population Day. This event has been celebrated for almost three decades and the aim is to focus the world’s attention on the importance of population issues. \nThe Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme recommended its introduction in 1989. Inspiration for this special day comes from the interest that was raised by “Five Billion Day” on 11th July\, 1987. This was the day when the world’s population reached 5 billion. \nIn 1968\, the International Conference on Human Rights was held. For the first time ever\, family planning was affirmed to be a human right. The Tehran Proclamation\, adopted during the conference\, states that it is a basic right of parents to be able to decide on the number and spacing of their children. \nMillions of women\, globally\, are still not given access to safe and effective family planning methods. Which is why it has been chosen as the focus for previous years. A basic human right is to be able to get safe and effective family planning. It should also be a voluntary choice. Gender equality and women’s empowerment depend on it. Further more\, it is a key factor in reducing poverty.

DESCRIPTION:Take part in the UK’s biggest cycle commuting event \nCycle to Work Day is for absolutely everyone. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t cycled in years or have never cycled at all. Allotments have many benefits. They bring people together and unite them through their shared love of low-cost\, healthy fresh fruit and vegetables\, physical exercise and social interaction. \nAllotments are a valuable resource and both you as individuals and as community groups take immense pride in their up keep and produce. As allotment holders you are already active in your local community. However did you know that there are powers available that can help you and others in your local community shape and improve the neighbourhood in which you live? These powers\, known as Community Rights\, give recognition to valuable community assets such as allotments\, pubs\, local shops and community centres and can help ensure that these assets continue to be of benefit to local people. \nYou are able to list your allotment as an Asset of Community Value and this is where the Community Right to Bid comes in. It can help to protect vital community assets such as allotments in your neighbourhood. Allotments add to the wellbeing of local communities and you and your neighbours can therefore nominate your allotment to be put on a list of Assets of Community Value by your Local Authority. If an Asset of Community Value is then put up for sale\, local community groups can pause‚the sale for six months while they raise the funds to bid to buy it. \nNearly 100 allotments have been listed by local community groups across the country. The purpose of World Humanitarian Day is to raise awareness of the plight of civilians around the world who have become caught up in conflicts\, and also honour and raise support for the humanitarian workers who risk\, and sometimes lose\, their lives to help.\nOver 130 million people throughout the world are currently in crisis\, either through war or natural disasters and are in need of humanitarian aid. \nWorld Humanitarian Day was established in 2008 by the United Nations General Assembly and was first officially celebrated in 2009. The date of 19th August was chosen as it marks the anniversary of the bombing of the Canal Hotel in Baghdad\, an event in which the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights\, Sergio Vieira de Mellothe and twenty others lost their lives. \nEach year a different theme is chosen for World Humanitarian Day and organisations worldwide get involved to honour this day in a range of ways\, from fundraisers to lectures and other events all aimed at raising awareness.

DESCRIPTION:National Public Lands Day (NPLD) is a national annual observance that typically falls on the last Saturday in September. It focuses on volunteer conservation of public lands (lands held by central or local governments). \nOrganized each year by the National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF)\, National Public Lands Day promotes the connection between people and the environment by inviting everyone to get outside. Public lands in the United States include parks\, forests\, and wildlife management areas. Most of them are open for recreational use. \nThe Nations largest volunteer event\, the event was first held in 1994 when 700 volunteers worked at three sites. The initiative turned out a huge success and became an annual tradition. \nBy 2014\, participation grew to about 175\,000 volunteers at more than 2\,000 sites throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. NPLD focuses on caring for public lands across the country\, educating the citizens about the natural resources and environment. Whether it be from damage caused by natural disasters and extreme weather\, human activities or the host of other factors that impact upon our public lands threatening the health and well being of the people and wildlife who depend upon them\, public land managers\, volunteers\, and others who steward these special places work tirelessly to restore these areas\, make them more resilient to future threats\, and ensure that people and wildlife continue to enjoy them for years to come. \nIt is supported by federal agencies\, state\, regional and local governments\, and non-profit organizations. NPLD volunteers collect invasive plants\, build and maintain trails\, plant trees\, shrubs and other plants\, remove trash from trails and other places. They also donate money through volunteer services to help improve public land sites. \nFree for all to attend and volunteers welcomed\, what a fantastic opportunity to get outdoors\, breathe in the fresh air\, enjoy the scenery and even volunteer!
