This ground-breaking global awareness week\, spearheaded by international NGO\, How Many Elephants (HME) celebrates and supports female wildlife rangers – They’re bold\, changing the game and paving the way for women to stand alongside men at the forefront of conservation\, but they need allies.\n\nThe pioneering World Female Ranger Week (WFRW) includes online and live events\, plus a fundraising platform – http://www.worldfemalerangerweek.org – to raise vital funds for the ranger teams and share their stories. \nThe founder of How Many Elephants and World Female Ranger Week\, Holly Budge says\, “having patrolled with multiple ranger teams in Africa\, I’ve seen first-hand how these bold women are impacting lives; Protecting wildlife\, uplifting communities and empowering other women. WFRW highlights the significant gender imbalance in environmental conservation. My team and I will continue collating gender-specific data about female rangers globally\, enabling us to identify their needs\, find tangible solutions and help build effective policies to contribute towards positive outcomes; for female rangers and conservation as a whole.” \nAs champions of wildlife conservation\, as role models\, as educators and as beacons of hope\, female rangers are not only transforming attitudes towards the role of women around the world; they are showing the capabilities and success of females in traditionally male roles. However\, less than 11% of the global wildlife ranger workforce is female. With women being natural communicators\, protectors and investing their earned income in their families\, bringing gender equality into the workforce enhances community conservation efforts and relationships. Over the last two years\, the pandemic has crippled tourism and funding for conservation projects globally. The lack of tourists visiting National Parks has led to many rangers losing their jobs or having significant salary cuts. The knock-on effect of this is huge. For example\, one ranger in Africa may support up to 16 family members. Additionally\, reduced vigilance in tourist hotspots has left wildlife even more vulnerable to poaching. \nSo\, the often-challenging work of rangers is paramount right now. Day and night\, female rangers patrol wilderness areas\, monitoring wildlife\, seizing snares\, working with communities and in some cases\, arresting poachers\, all to save iconic species from extinction. They are away from their families for long periods\, sometimes facing workplace security issues and battling social stigma. Many of these inspirational women have overcome adversity\, poverty and marginalisation. Becoming a ranger has empowered them\, turned them into breadwinners and property owners\, and has allowed them access to higher education and much-needed healthcare. They need our support to continue their vital work. \n\nWhen is World Female Ranger Week? \nJune 23rd-30th 2024 (and annually)\nHow to get involved in World Female Ranger Week?\n\nWorld Female Ranger Week is seeking long-term strategic partnerships with companies\, associations\, and global citizens to expand the campaign’s reach to strengthen the support of female rangers. Businesses and individuals can set up fundraising pages via worldfemalerangerweek.org. \nFor updates\, follow @worldfemalerangerweek on Instagram and Facebook\, @femalerangerwk on Twitter\, or use hashtag\, #worldfemalerangerweek. These include a range of wildflowers\, bryophytes\, invertebrates and insects who require bare sand habitat to survive.Coastal sand dunes are also beautiful and important landscapes for communities\, both as recreational spaces allowing personal connection with nature\, and as places filled with cultural heritage and celebrated sites of historic renown. \nOver the last 80 years\, open sand has largely disappeared from UK sand dunes\, being replaced by dense grass and scrub. This change has been caused by factors such as the introduction of non-native plants\, lower levels of grazing\, climate change and air pollution. As the dunes have become more stable and overgrown\, rare wildlife has declined. \nThe day is being set up by the Twyni Byw-Sands of LIFE and Dynamic Dunescapes projects. These are two projects working to protect sand dunes and the wildlife that depends upon them. Events are still currently at planning stage\, but you can keep in touch by visiting their twitter accounts: @TwyniByw and @DynamicDunes. The hashtag for the day will be #WorldSandDuneDay. \nSands of LIFE (LIFE17 NAT/UK/000023) is a major conservation project to revitalise sand dunes across Wales. It will recreate natural movement in the dunes and rejuvenate habitats which are home to some of our rarest wildlife. The £4 million project\, led by Natural Resources Wales (NRW)\, will restore over 2400 hectares of sand dunes\, across four Special Areas of Conservation\, on 10 separate Welsh sites. The project has received 75% funding from the LIFE Programme of the European Union\, with the Welsh Government providing 25% match funding. \nDynamic Dunescapes (HG-16-08643; LIFE17 NAT/UK/000570-DuneLIFE) is a partnership project rejuvenating sand dunes in England and Wales. Project partners are Natural England\, Plantlife\, Natural Resources Wales\, National Trust and The Wildlife Trusts. The project is funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the EU LIFE Programme. This year the Day will recognise the unique contribution made by seafarers from all over the world to international seaborne trade\, the world economy and civil society as a whole\, with the theme Seafarers Matter’. \nThe day recognises the unique and vital role of seafarers in the global community\, and the United Nations recognise the Day of the Seafarer as an observance day. \nThe Day of the Seafarer was established in 2010 by by a resolution adopted at a diplomatic conference in Manila. The revised International Convention on Standards of Training\, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW)\, the original STCW was to ensure an international standard of competency and welfare for seafarers\, for their safety\, and the revision was to ensure the upholding of the Day of the Seafarer as part of this. The convention’s aim was to recognise the contribution by seafarers to society and economy globally. \nThe resolution encourages governments\, shipping firms\, companies associated with sea trade and others\, to promote and uphold sea trade and seafarers through the Day of the Seafarer. \nThe day encourages international public and official conversation about seafarers and seafaring\, and the well-being of those involved in it\, and interactive media relating to the Day of the Seafarer has proved extremely popular around the world\, for example quizzes and interactive maps\, videos and photo galleries\, and social media hashtags and discussions. The day aims to see events run in ports and seafarer centres as well as online. \nLeading up to the 25 June\, seafarers are being invited to answer questions on what a fair future for seafarers looks like. The answers will be shared afterwards and will provide a soundboard to help guide our actions moving forward. Polls are available on all IMO social media platforms. Established in 1995 the day aims to encourage people to get tested for HIV\, know their status and get linked to care and treatment. \nMay national organisations\, government bodies and medical care providers join forces to raise the profile of the day and the disease. \nThe day educates people about HIV\, what it is\, how it is transmitted\, who is at risk and the symptoms. It also aims to signpost people who suspect they may be at risk to the relevant places to get tested and the subsequent care and support available to them. \nMore than 1.1 million people in the U.S. are living with HIV today\, and 1 in 7 of them don’t know it. However with awareness continuing to rise and the accessibility to advice and services improving\, the annual number of infections in the US is gradually declining. This event has been celebrated for almost three decades and the aim is to focus the world’s attention on the importance of population issues. \nThe Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme recommended its introduction in 1989. Inspiration for this special day comes from the interest that was raised by “Five Billion Day” on 11th July\, 1987. This was the day when the world’s population reached 5 billion. \nIn 1968\, the International Conference on Human Rights was held. For the first time ever\, family planning was affirmed to be a human right. The Tehran Proclamation\, adopted during the conference\, states that it is a basic right of parents to be able to decide on the number and spacing of their children. \nMillions of women\, globally\, are still not given access to safe and effective family planning methods. Which is why it has been chosen as the focus for previous years. A basic human right is to be able to get safe and effective family planning. It should also be a voluntary choice. Gender equality and women’s empowerment depend on it. Further more\, it is a key factor in reducing poverty. In addition\, women are more likely to be underemployed and under-paid\, and to undertake part-time jobs or work under temporary contracts. \nThat is why education and training are key determinants of success in the labor market. But unfortunately\, existing systems are failing to address the learning needs of many young people\, and surveys of learning outcomes and skills show that a large number of youth have low levels of achievement in basic literacy and numeracy. Skills and jobs for youth feature prominently in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development\, and SDG target 4.4 calls for a substantial increase in the number of youth and adults who have relevant skills. It came about when 120 states adopted a statute in Rome. It was known as the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (“the Rome Stature”). All the countries that agreed to adopt the statute were accepting the jurisdiction of the ICC\, with regards the prosecution of very serious crimes. The idea was not for the ICC to replace national courts. It is only able to intervene when a country can’t or won’t carry out investigations and prosecute perpetrators. \nThe Aim of International Justice Day \nThe aim of this day is to unite everyone who wants to support justice as well as promote victims rights. It is to help prevent serious crimes and those that put the peace\, security and well-being of the world at risk. \nHow You Can Mark the Day \nThere are a number of different ways you can play a part. Why not write an article or a blog to highlight the need for justice where you live? You could send a communication to your local elected representative and voice your opinion. Speak to members of your government. Or take part in one of the many events that will be held in cities around the world. The team at National Trust Midlands came up with the idea for the same sort of day for Archaeology\, and so #AskAnArchaeologist Day was born. \nThe first #AskAnArchaeologist day was in 2018 and was very successful. Originally celebrated on 2nd August\, the day was largely viewed cynically by the public as a money making exercise\, sales of friendship day cards did not take off in Europe and by the mid-1940’s the day had faded into obscurity in the USA. The idea of a day to honour friendship was\, however\, adopted by a number of countries in Asia where it remained a popular custom to reserve a day for celebrating friendships and the exchange of gifts between friends. \nThe first World Friendship Day was proposed for 30 July 1958 by the World Friendship Crusade\, an international civil organisation that campaigns to foster a culture of peace through friendship. Many years later\, in 2011\, the 30th July was declared as the International Day of Friendship by the General Assembly of United Nations. \nWith the growing popularity of social media throughout the world\, there has been an increase in celebrating World Friendship day and International Day of Friendship online as well as with community activities in local communities aimed at bringing those of different backgrounds together. People trafficking and modern day slavery is a massive worldwide problem with very few countries immune to human trafficking\, and the event by the United Nations is to raise awareness and increase prevention of that. \nThousands of men\, women and children end up in the hands of traffickers every year\, often through being tricked and mislead to believe that they are being taken to work that will make their family better off\, or through force\, kidnap\, or even through very poor families selling children in order to survive. There are many ways that people get caught up in trafficking\, but the result is the same\, they lose their rights and identity and are used and abused\, and it is a global problem\, an industry not far behind drugs and arms in terms of profit for traffickers. \nTrafficked people are forced to work\, often doing hard labour or prostitution\, for no reward\, and usually have their identity and documents removed from them and are warned of terrible punishments if they escape\, and often they are taken to unfamiliar countries where they don’t know the language and have no way of getting help\, some die and are never heard of again by their families and communities. \nA global problem like trafficking needs a global solution\, which is why the United Nations organise the World Day against Trafficking in Persons\, to raise awareness encourage vigilance and gain support for prevention of human trafficking\, and also why they have produced a protocol to punish human trafficking and are hoping to implement this globally\, as well as an act to protect victims of trafficking. On August 4\, 1790 Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton established the Revenue-Marine to serve as an armed customs enforcement service. In 1894\, it was renamed the Revenue Cutter Service. In 1915\, it merged with the U.S. Life-Saving Service. Thus the United States Coast Guard was formed. \nFor those who dont know\, the Coast Guard is an all important maritime first responder; “the principal Federal agency responsible for maritime safety\, security\, and environmental stewardship in U.S. ports and waterways”. \nThe Coast Guards are one of the five Armed Services of the United States\, and the only military branch within the Department of Homeland Security. In addition to its role as an Armed Service\, the Coast Guard is a first responder and humanitarian service that provides aid to people in distress or impacted by natural and man-made disasters whether at sea or ashore. The Coast Guard is a member of the Intelligence Community\, and is a law enforcement and regulatory agency with broad legal authorities associated with maritime transportation\, hazardous materials shipping\, bridge administration\, oil spill response\, pilotage\, and vessel construction and operation. \nCoast Guard Day is mainly an internal event\, however we feel that such is the importance of the work that is carried out byt he Coast Guard\, more should be done to thank\, honor and celebrate them. It is celebrated primarily by Coast Guardsmen\, both active duty and reserve\, as well as retirees\, civilian employees\, dependants\, and auxiliarists. Coast Guard units across the country organize picnics and sport competitions. So why not show your appreciation for those people involved and the service they provide and support any local events that may take place\, or simply educate others about the work they do? Allotments have many benefits. They bring people together and unite them through their shared love of low-cost\, healthy fresh fruit and vegetables\, physical exercise and social interaction. \nAllotments are a valuable resource and both you as individuals and as community groups take immense pride in their up keep and produce. As allotment holders you are already active in your local community. However did you know that there are powers available that can help you and others in your local community shape and improve the neighbourhood in which you live? These powers\, known as Community Rights\, give recognition to valuable community assets such as allotments\, pubs\, local shops and community centres and can help ensure that these assets continue to be of benefit to local people. \nYou are able to list your allotment as an Asset of Community Value and this is where the Community Right to Bid comes in. It can help to protect vital community assets such as allotments in your neighbourhood. Allotments add to the wellbeing of local communities and you and your neighbours can therefore nominate your allotment to be put on a list of Assets of Community Value by your Local Authority. If an Asset of Community Value is then put up for sale\, local community groups can pause‚the sale for six months while they raise the funds to bid to buy it. \nNearly 100 allotments have been listed by local community groups across the country. Are you one of them? If so you can now apply for an ACV Certificate to celebrate your allotment. \nEmail community.assets@communities.gsi.gov.uk for more details about getting a personalised certificate for you to print out and display to let everyone know how much your allotment is valued by your local community. For more information about assets of community value and how to protect them please visithttp://mycommunity.org.uk/programme/community-asset-ownership/ \nThe Department for Communities and Local Government has also produced a simple guide to community rights called You’ve got the power?’ \nYou can also have your say in the way your neighbourhood develops in the future. Neighbourhood planning enables local communities to shape the places where you live and work. Over 1400 communities have started neighbourhood planning in their area and around a third of the neighbourhood plans which are now in force include policies on allotments. If you’re interested to find out how you can get started\, there’s lots of information here: http://mycommunity.org.uk/programme/neighbourhood-planning/ \nIf you’re involved in your local area\, you can also join the My Community Network to chat to experts and connect with others who are also passionate about their community. Through the Network\, you get: \nAccess to live discussions and expert advice on the forum \nInspiration and tips from other people from across the country \nQuick responses to questions about community activity and programmes \nNetworking with like-minded and experienced people \nCoaching and mentoring from experts in the field \nInvitations to free learning hubs and event URL:https://www.awarenessdays.com/awareness-days-calendar/national-allotments-week-2024/ CATEGORIES:August,Community Awareness,Education Awareness,Environmental Awareness,Family Awareness,Food Awareness,UK ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://www.awarenessdays.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/iStock-646190406-1-1.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20240813 DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20240814 DTSTAMP:20240625T082542 CREATED:20231008T122124Z LAST-MODIFIED:20231008T122124Z UID:10017322-1723507200-1723593599@www.awarenessdays.com SUMMARY:National Opportunity Day 2024 DESCRIPTION:What is National Opportunity Day?\nImagine a world where setbacks are simply stepping stones. This day is annually observed on August 16.\nThe use of parachutes was an innovative method of warfare during World War II. This gave the Allied an opportunity to deploy the troops behind enemy lines. The first parachute jump pioneered the way for future jumps and also marked the birth of new airborne forces\, that might play a vital role in military future. \nThe U.S. Army conducted the first combat parachute jumps in November 1942: the soldiers of the 2nd Battalion 509th Parachute Infantry made a total of 93 combat jumps. National Punctuation Day was created by Jeff Rubin in 2004 to emphasize the vital role of punctuation marks in written English. In the English language\, the simple differences in punctuation can produce the sharp differences in meaning\, that is why correct punctuation is so important. \nThere are two major styles of punctuation in the English language: British (logical punctuation) and American (traditional punctuation). They differ primarily in the way they handle quotation marks. The rest of the basic punctuation rules are essentially the same in all varieties of English. Sadly these rules are often ignored\, which may lead to misunderstanding. Punctuation is as important as any other aspect of the written language. That is why Rubin founded National Punctuation Day.National Punctuation Day is marked with special lessons at schools\, contests\, fundraisers\, and other appropriate events and activities. \nIn 2006\, Jeff Rubin and his wife\, Norma\, launched Punctuation Playtime. It is a program for elementary school students that focuses on reinforcing important punctuation lessons.
