DESCRIPTION:What is World Female Ranger Week?\nAdventurer Holly Budge launches World Female Ranger Week (June 23-30th\, 2024) to amplify the impact of female wildlife rangers on a global stage. This ground-breaking global awareness week\, spearheaded by international NGO\, How Many Elephants (HME) celebrates and supports female wildlife rangers – They’re bold\, changing the game and paving the way for women to stand alongside men at the forefront of conservation\, but they need allies.\n\nThe pioneering World Female Ranger Week (WFRW) includes online and live events\, plus a fundraising platform – http://www.worldfemalerangerweek.org – to raise vital funds for the ranger teams and share their stories. \nThe founder of How Many Elephants and World Female Ranger Week\, Holly Budge says\, “having patrolled with multiple ranger teams in Africa\, I’ve seen first-hand how these bold women are impacting lives; Protecting wildlife\, uplifting communities and empowering other women. WFRW highlights the significant gender imbalance in environmental conservation. My team and I will continue collating gender-specific data about female rangers globally\, enabling us to identify their needs\, find tangible solutions and help build effective policies to contribute towards positive outcomes; for female rangers and conservation as a whole.” \nAs champions of wildlife conservation\, as role models\, as educators and as beacons of hope\, female rangers are not only transforming attitudes towards the role of women around the world; they are showing the capabilities and success of females in traditionally male roles. However\, less than 11% of the global wildlife ranger workforce is female. With women being natural communicators\, protectors and investing their earned income in their families\, bringing gender equality into the workforce enhances community conservation efforts and relationships. Over the last two years\, the pandemic has crippled tourism and funding for conservation projects globally. The lack of tourists visiting National Parks has led to many rangers losing their jobs or having significant salary cuts. The knock-on effect of this is huge. For example\, one ranger in Africa may support up to 16 family members. Additionally\, reduced vigilance in tourist hotspots has left wildlife even more vulnerable to poaching. \nSo\, the often-challenging work of rangers is paramount right now. Day and night\, female rangers patrol wilderness areas\, monitoring wildlife\, seizing snares\, working with communities and in some cases\, arresting poachers\, all to save iconic species from extinction. They are away from their families for long periods\, sometimes facing workplace security issues and battling social stigma. Many of these inspirational women have overcome adversity\, poverty and marginalisation. Becoming a ranger has empowered them\, turned them into breadwinners and property owners\, and has allowed them access to higher education and much-needed healthcare. SUMMARY:World Sand Dune Day 2024
DESCRIPTION:A World Sand Dune Day is being setup to highlight the importance of sand dunes.\nHealthy dunes provide habitats for a wealth of rare and specialised wildlife. These include a range of wildflowers\, bryophytes\, invertebrates and insects who require bare sand habitat to survive.Coastal sand dunes are also beautiful and important landscapes for communities\, both as recreational spaces allowing personal connection with nature\, and as places filled with cultural heritage and celebrated sites of historic renown. \nOver the last 80 years\, open sand has largely disappeared from UK sand dunes\, being replaced by dense grass and scrub. This change has been caused by factors such as the introduction of non-native plants\, lower levels of grazing\, climate change and air pollution. As the dunes have become more stable and overgrown\, rare wildlife has declined. \nThe day is being set up by the Twyni Byw-Sands of LIFE and Dynamic Dunescapes projects. These are two projects working to protect sand dunes and the wildlife that depends upon them. Events are still currently at planning stage\, but you can keep in touch by visiting their twitter accounts: @TwyniByw and @DynamicDunes. The hashtag for the day will be #WorldSandDuneDay. \nSands of LIFE (LIFE17 NAT/UK/000023) is a major conservation project to revitalise sand dunes across Wales. It will recreate natural movement in the dunes and rejuvenate habitats which are home to some of our rarest wildlife. The £4 million project\, led by Natural Resources Wales (NRW)\, will restore over 2400 hectares of sand dunes\, across four Special Areas of Conservation\, on 10 separate Welsh sites. The project has received 75% funding from the LIFE Programme of the European Union\, with the Welsh Government providing 25% match funding. \nDynamic Dunescapes (HG-16-08643; LIFE17 NAT/UK/000570-DuneLIFE) is a partnership project rejuvenating sand dunes in England and Wales. Project partners are Natural England\, Plantlife\, Natural Resources Wales\, National Trust and The Wildlife Trusts. SUMMARY:Day of the Seafarer 2024
DESCRIPTION:June 25 is the Day of the Seafarer\, an annual and international event day coordinated by the International Maritime Organisation.\nLast year’s Day of the Seafarer celebrated seafarers and let the world know how and why seafarers are indispensable to everyone. This year the Day will recognise the unique contribution made by seafarers from all over the world to international seaborne trade\, the world economy and civil society as a whole\, with the theme Seafarers Matter’. \nThe day recognises the unique and vital role of seafarers in the global community\, and the United Nations recognise the Day of the Seafarer as an observance day. \nThe Day of the Seafarer was established in 2010 by by a resolution adopted at a diplomatic conference in Manila. The revised International Convention on Standards of Training\, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW)\, the original STCW was to ensure an international standard of competency and welfare for seafarers\, for their safety\, and the revision was to ensure the upholding of the Day of the Seafarer as part of this. The convention’s aim was to recognise the contribution by seafarers to society and economy globally. \nThe resolution encourages governments\, shipping firms\, companies associated with sea trade and others\, to promote and uphold sea trade and seafarers through the Day of the Seafarer. \nThe day encourages international public and official conversation about seafarers and seafaring\, and the well-being of those involved in it\, and interactive media relating to the Day of the Seafarer has proved extremely popular around the world\, for example quizzes and interactive maps\, videos and photo galleries\, and social media hashtags and discussions. The day aims to see events run in ports and seafarer centres as well as online. \nLeading up to the 25 June\, seafarers are being invited to answer questions on what a fair future for seafarers looks like. The answers will be shared afterwards and will provide a soundboard to help guide our actions moving forward. Polls are available on all IMO social media platforms.
